This could be a turning point in the understanding and treatment of AIDS, especially in infants.
Dr. Deborah Persaud of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is a virologist who discovered that a child who was treated with anti-HIV drugs just before her birth (the mother didn’t know she was infectected) and after birth, has no detectable virus in her blood other than genetic fragments found by extensive PCR testing. The baby, now 2 1/2 years old, does not have evidence of virus that can invade cells or replicate, that it can spread from one cell or another or damage the child’s immune system.
Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga of the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine has worked on the same study.
